If you can color, you can shade! What's up guys? People have been requesting art tutorials and I decided to make one for you guys! In this first tutorial I am going to show you the basics of shading! So grab a piece of paper and a pencil and lets get drawing! For this exercise you would need to have a light source. You can put the light source coming at any direction. In the video I put the light source coming from the top left of the page. Next you need to draw three solid objects at three different areas (check video for more info). For example, a sphere, a cone, and a cylinder. Now you are ready to shade! Notice in the video how the arrows show the direction of light where the light hits the object. Remember where ever the light hits the object that is where the lightest shade is going to be. Where the light doesn't hit the object is where the darker shades are going to be. Make sure when you shade that the different shades blend and get lighter as it gets closer to the light source. Now since you have your object shaded, you will need to draw a shadow that the object makes. Shadows are always behind the object from where the light is hitting the object (see in the video where shadows go). When shading a shadow, where the object touches the shadow is always going to be the darkest of the shade. From there, the other shades fade out. Our brain recognizes the pattern and associates it with objects that are overlayed on one another, thus having depth. 2012 Halloween House Projection Video

This is the raw video we made to project onto our house this halloween. This is NOT what it looks like projected on the house. Will post that later. Last year, we projected fire on the outdoor lights, but this year we have decided to use physical flicker bulbs, so that will offer some contrast to the final look. One of my daughters is an amazing artist and she painted the spooky version of our house. My oldest daughter has become very proficient with Adobe Aftereffects and she did the warping effects and the exploding house effects.
